2.8 Internal validity threats - research setup | Quantitative methods | The Scientific Method | UvA
In this video you'll learn about another category of threats to internal validity: threats that have to do with the research setup. These concern effects that result from the design of the study. The threats discussed here are ambiguous temporal precedence, history and mortality.

1.7 Pragmatism | Qualitative Methods | Philosophy of Qualitative Research | UvA
In this video Dr Moerman gives you an overview of what pragmatism is and how it developed. You learn about the pragmatist maxim.
1.4 Epistemology | Qualitative Methods | Philosophy of Qualitative Research | UvA
This video discusses epistemology. You are introduced to two views of epistemology: positivism and interpretivism. The video explains the most important characteristics of these strands of epistemology and how they are situated in qualitative social research. One characteristic is explained in further detail: falsification versus verification.
1.3 Ontology for social researchers | Qualitative Methods | Philosophy of Qualitative Research | UvA
Most textbooks only discuss ontology for social actors, but in this video you also learn about ontology for social researchers. Dr Moerman refines the definitions of objectivism, pragmatism and constructivism you saw earlier by explaining how subtle realism and naturalism fit in here.
1.5 Hermeneutics | Qualitative Methods | Philosophy of Qualitative Research | UvA
The next videos introduce you to three foundational philosophies in qualitative research. In this video Dr Moerman explains what hermeneutics is and why it is important for qualitative research. You learn about the hermeneutic circle and its two important elements: knowledge cannot be considered independently of the knowing person and every person and all knowledge is embedded in a context.
1.6 Phenomenology | Qualitative Methods | Philosophy of Qualitative Research | UvA
In this video you learn about the important characteristics of phenomenology is. Three different methods of interpretation in phenomenology are explained: description of a lived experience, interpretation of a kind of experience and analysis of the form of an experience. You also learn about Schütz and the use of 'bracketing' in phenomenology.
1.1 Cases, variables and levels of measurement | Basic Statistics | Exploring Data | UvA
This video explains the difference between cases and variables. Variables can be measured on different levels. There are categorical variables (nominal, ordinal) and quantitative variables (interval, ratio). We can also distinguish between discrete and continuous variables.
1.5 Range, interquartile range and box plot | Basic Statistics | Exploring Data | UvA
To describe a distribution you need more information than the measures of central tendency. You also need information about the variability (or dispersion) of the data. Matthijs discusses the (dis)advantages of two measures of variability: the range and the interquartile range. You also learn about the boxplot, a useful graph that gives a good indication of how the values of your distribution a...
1.6 Variance and standard deviation | Basic Statistics | Exploring Data | UvA
This video discusses two other measures of variability that are often used in statistical studies: the variance and the standard deviation. You learn how to calculate the variance and standard deviation by hand (using a formula).
1.4 Mode, median and mean | Basic Statistics | Exploring Data | UvA
Next to summarizing a distribution by means of graphs, it can also be useful to summarize the center of your distribution. In this video Matthijs discusses three main ways to do this: the mode, mean and median. You also learn when to use which measure of central tendency.
3.10 Independence between random events | Basic Statistics | Probability | UvA
This video explains independence, a concept in probability theory that you will encounter frequently.
1.3 Graphs and shapes of distributions | Basic Statistics | Exploring Data | UvA
In this video Matthijs shows you how to summarize and present data from frequency tables into different types of graphs. He discusses the (dis)advantages of bar graphs vs. pie charts, dot plots vs. histograms. Shapes of distributions (histograms) are also explained.

This video explains what a data matrix and frequency table are and how you can use them with different types of variables. The video also shortly touches upon what to do with missing values and how to recode quantitative variables into ordinal ones.

Hello. I am interested if you know of a study that uses this statistical measure. Most of the studies I find use only the z-test for independent proportions or the t-test.

yes of course you can that is all a poll does is collect data and score the response.

@@dzulhajjaeynabesiregar3908 still yes that is the precise use of a poll it it’s to collect data for a quantitative nature and deliver the information to a user. It is a research tool. It is essentially a single question of a research survey. So yes if the only thing you want information on to quantify is a single question and not a multitude of them a poll is a good method of getting a multiple choice response.
